A lifetime in the theater

“I can remember San Francisco from before there were bridges,” Multi Ethnic Theater founder and director Lewis Campbell says from the tech booth at Gough Street Playhouse.

With the final rehearsal for “Two Trains Running” — his fifth August Wilson play — coming up, Campbell is busily hanging lights and installing a new lighting control board he’d found in a hurry online.

[...] the 82-year-old Campbell admits, he doesn’t “precisely remember the absence of bridges.”

Campbell has spent most of his life in the region — growing up, he says, “all over the Bay Area, Menlo Park, Mill Valley, San Leandro” — graduating from San Jose State College in 1955 and returning there, after a stint in the Army in Germany, to get his teaching credential.

[...] for almost all that time he’s been heavily involved in theater, majoring in it as an undergraduate, directing with the Seventh Army Repertory Company while serving as a radio operator in a field artillery observation battalion.

For much of that time he ran a district-wide Center for Theater Training, a program that became part of the School of the Arts high school (now Ruth Asawa School of the Arts) when it was founded, where he was “the actor training teacher until I retired in 1993.”

Campbell continues to substitute teach, “up to five days a week,” partly, he says, “because it supports my theater company.”

MET, which he founded in ’93 at Potrero Hill Neighborhood House (moving to Gough Street three years later), is partly an extension for adults of the school productions he mounted and, even more, of his commitment to community theater — as “theater that reaches out to the neighborhood and to a larger community, in both the small and the largest possible sense.”

The run-through had been called for 8 p.m., but most of the cast was onstage, in costume and working on a scene an hour before then, under the guidance of assistant director and stage manager Esperanza Catubig, another of his former students (“She played Juliet for me”).

Some — Bennie Lewis as the owner of the diner where the play takes place, Stuart Elwyn Hall as the diner’s resident philosopher, Vernon Medearis as a venal mortician — have appeared in three of the four so far; Fabian Herd, who plays the smooth numbers runner Wolf, is in his fifth, having been with MET since it began.

[...] he has to master this new lighting board (“I’ll go home tonight and download a manual,” he reassures the cast).

“I figure it’s time for me to create less and mentor more,” he says, adding that he’s hiring a publicist and plans to bring in other directors for the coming season.

[...] there’s an opening to prepare for.
